Since she started appearing on TV shows and in movies, the popularity of Tonya increased. The year 1994 was the time Tonya became a celebrity because her principal opponent Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted just prior to the "National Championship". The recognition and popularity so well that she changed the culture of skating for women. In 2017, a documentary titled "I, Tonya" was made about her life and achievements.
