Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. But her parents would not let her perform until she turned an adult because of the effects stress would be able to have on their daughter. Perry was shy during high school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent when she finished her degree. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move to California and she returned to work in the stage. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The role was given by audition despite the fact that she has a family tie with the character.
